Donostia-San Sebastian. Promenade and beach Of Ondarreta (Playa de Ondarreta)

I continue my walk along the beaches of Donostia.

Donostia-San Sebastian. The beach of La Concha (Playa de la Concha)

From the West, La Concha Bay is separated from the ocean by Monte Igeldo mountain, on top of which there is an amusement Park, an old lighthouse and a hotel. This is the purpose of my walk today.

This abbreviation stands for "Donostia-San Sebastian cultural capital of Europe in 2016". The Spanish city will hold this honorary title for the fourth time, before that, the capitals of culture were Madrid in 1992, Santiago de Compostela in 2000 and Salamanca in 2002.

Donostia-San Sebastian. Igeldo Mountain

A game of nature - a whimsically curved tree trunk. The curve overhanging the footpath is carefully painted with warning yellow paint - these are the little things that make up urban culture.

In the Western part of the Bay, behind the Miramar Palace, is Ondaretta beach (on the map), a popular family holiday destination.

This 600-meter-long beach has a wider strip of sand than La Concha, so much of It remains dry at high tide.

Along the beach stretches a small cozy garden (Jardines de la Playa de Ondarreta).

Here, in 1942, a monument to the Dowager Queen Maria Christina was unveiled, thanks to which the small fishing town became a famous resort. The author of the sculpture is josé Diaz Bueno.

Ondaretta beach turns into the promenade Eduardo Chillida Paseolekua, named after the famous sculptor and graphic artist, a native of San Sebastian. His avant-garde sculptures can also be seen on the coastal cliffs.

This is a favorite place of surfers, the sheer granite wall of the embankment forms a steep wave in this place.

Finally, I reached the lower station of the Monte Igeldo funicular.
